Marvel Comics has decided that its hammer-wielding Norse superhero Thor will now be transformed into a woman. Of course they don’t own the archetypal character of Thor; Marvel only owns their particular brand of a Thor image, since Thor is derived from ancient Norse mythology, whom in Old Norse is called Þórr.
Thor is a hammer-wielding God associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees and strength, whom protected humanity against malign influences. He is also associated with hallowing, healing and fertility.
The cognate deity in wider Germanic mythology and paganism was known in Old English as Þunor and in Old High German as Donar, stemming from a Common Germanic Þunraz, meaning thunder.
