Rudi Dutschke, Victor Serge and Kronstadt

I’m currently in the middle of Gretschen Dutschke-Klotz’s harrowing biography of her late husband Rudi Dutschke, Rudi Dutschke. Wir hatten ein barbarisches, schönes Leben. Eine Biographie. At one point, Dutschke-Klotz recalls a trip that Dutschke made to Moscow in 1965 and a passage in his diary about Kronstadt and his recent reading of Victor Serge’s memoir. I’ve quoted the passage below in German (translation to follow shortly):

Design Ethics

May 24, 2015

The Sixth Form

Shil Patel, Year 12, writes:

“On the 20th of October, Reverend Joanna Jepson came to talk to the Ficino Society on design ethics. Being the chaplain for the London Collage of Fashion she believed that it was necessary to bring ethics into the world of fashion, where advertising and so called “cheap” fashion have a deter mental effect on the third world countries who produce these clothes. I would hope that after this talk we would all consider our fashion choices and to make a concious change to be more sustainable.”

A glorious wedding and a sonnet to suit.

May 24, 2015

Malcolm Guite

I had the great joy of preaching, in Portsmouth Cathedral at the wedding of my good friend Joanna Jepson, who is a well-spring and a great blessing to those who know her. She and her fiance had asked me for a poem as a wedding present and I was happy to oblige. I post it here with their permission in the hope that as well as being personal and particular to them, whose names are as it were watermarked into all I have written, it may also speak to other couples too.

As always you can hear it on audioboo by clicking on the play button if it appears or on the title of the poem

If anyone is in Christ there is a new creation 2 Cor.5:17

Now you have come at last to the first day
Inside that Love whose end is to begin.

Sunday Morning Live

May 24, 2015

Let's Talk About That

I’ve just about got over watching Sunday Morning Live.

It has to be the single worst “moral debate” program I’ve seen on the BBC.

It’s so lightweight it makes The One Show look like Panorama!

But what was MOST distracting this weekend was one of the guests. It was Reverend Joanna Jepson who made the papers in 2001 when trying to stop the late termination of a foetus which had a cleft lip and palate under the grounds it did not constitute a serious handicap.

She herself was born with a jaw deformity, which has since been corrected with surgery. So you can pretty easily see why she might have an issue with this regard. Myself, I’d have to understand more of the actual medical details rather than those reported 3rd hand.

What I DID find rather bizarre was her appearance on the show. Having previously seen shots of her…

The spread, at least judging from the magazine’s website, features the most risque photos yet of the woman dubbed a “femme fatale” by tabloids.
