Glastonbury 2014: Metallica thrill armchair viewers as they ‘prove their critics wrong’

It might have been a controversial choice of headline act – but if the reaction from the folks watching at home was anything to go by, Metallica’s Glastonbury performance has been a hit.

The rockers, who are the first heavy metal band ever to headline the Pyramid Stage at Worthy Farm, have not proven popular with everybody – particularly those who called for them to be banned from the festival over frontman James Hetfield’s affiliation with bear-hunting.

But when they actually took to the stage on Saturday night, it was a very different story, with those watching at home – not to mention those enthusiastically headbanging in the crowd – raving about their performance.

It all started in subdued, if enthusiastic fashion, as you pretty much begged Metallica to make their appearance:
