Reality check: NSA spying pales in comparison to European efforts

Despite the furor over PRISM, the U.S. National Security Agency’s data collection program, you are far more likely to be spied upon by the authorities if you live Italy or the Netherlands than if you live in the good old, US of A, a former NSA general counsel told Congress recently.

The difference is the surveilling over there is typically done by law enforcement organizations rather than a national super-spy agency and some say oversight here is actually tighter. According to security expert Chris Wolf:

“We can have a debate over whether or not the judicial and legislative approval process is working here in America, but the fact is, it exists, and in many places in Europe you don’t have that kind of due process … You don’t have legislative oversight. In fact, the national security investigations are done completely in the dark or mostly in the dark.”

An organisation called Stop Watching Us, which describes itself as a ”conglomeration of concerned citizens”, had called for protests in more than 30 cities across the country, according to its website. In Frankfurt, protesters braved 36-degree heat with banners that compared surveillance to a vision of novelist George Orwell and the secret police of former communist East Germany.

Up to 1000 people attended the demonstration in the country’s financial capital, broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk reported on its website, citing the police.

Liebknecht-Luxemburg-Demonstration 2012

Today is the day we remember our beloved fallen –  Rosa Luxemberg and Karl Liebknecht.

“On 31 December 1918/1 January 1919, Liebknecht was involved in the founding of the KPD. Together with Luxemburg, Leo Jogiches and Clara Zetkin, Liebknecht was also instrumental in the January 1919 Spartacist uprising in Berlin. Initially he and Luxemburg opposed the revolt, but participated after it had begun. The uprising was brutally opposed by the new German government under Friedrich Ebert with the help of the remnants of the Imperial German Army and militias called the Freikorps; by 13 January, the uprising had been extinguished. Liebknecht and Luxemburg were captured by Freikorps soldiers, on 15 January 1919, with considerable support from Minister of MSPD Defense Gustav Noske, and brought to the Eden Hotel in Berlin, where they were tortured[3] and interrogated for several hours. Following this, Luxemburg was beaten with…

On the Vanguard Party, Once Again

July 22, 2013

Moorbey'z Blog

The following is from an interview by correspondence with Comrade Kevin “Rashid” Johnson, the Minister of Defense of the New Afrikan Black Panther Party–Prison Chapter (NABPP-PC), conducted by anarchist Comrade Anthony Rayson of the South Chicago ABC Zine Distro.

Anthony Rayson: You’ve expressed admiration for Hamas, the revolutionary Palestinian group.1 They’ve managed to build popular support and established social/survival programs, even under horrific conditions of occupation–extreme violence, poverty, etc.–yet they are not an explicitly Marxist–Leninist group, but rather a national liberation organization, with a strong religious (Muslim) component. These popular organizations have come in many flavors, including Communist and anarchist. Why do you believe so strongly in the traditional Leninist model (Vanguard Party/Democratic Centralism, etc.) in this uniquely racialist, consumerist, extreme capitalist country, with such a moribund, marginalized and subservient (to Moscow) Marxist tradition?

Rashid: Why in today’s struggle do I…
