Kia Ora Gaza

Early yesterday (New Zealand time) the Viva Palestina Arabia convoy crossed from Syria into Jordan,(1) heading for Israeli-besieged Gaza with second-hand clothes and medical supplies inside the dozen vehicles. According to their Facebook page, the convoy will be joined by a large truck in Jordan carrying additional medical aid.

All convoyers are reported to be safe and well after their military-escorted passage through strife-torn Syria. Friends of Palestine will, no doubt, breathe a collective sigh of relief at this welcome news.

Yet the Syria route chosen by Viva Palestina Arabia’s leaders has aroused more controversy among friends of Palestine than anything else in recent memory.

“The convoy travelling through Syria would be regarded by the majority of the Jordanian population as cooperation with the Syrian regime, legitimising crimes committed against its people,” noted Wael As-Sakka, chair of the Jordanian Lifeline Committee…
