I assumed SoftLayer is more like enterprise cloud provider Terremark (s vz) than it is like developer favorite Amazon Web Services (s amzn) — at least in its customer base if not in its technology — but I might have been wrong.

Here’s a list of services that run at least partially on the SoftLayer platform and that helped show me just how wrong I was:

  • Tumblr
  • OMGPOP
  • SendGrid
  • SlideShare
  • Struq
  • Cloudant
  • Host Gator
  • Modx
  • Citrix
  • ZipServers

Even Heroku (s crm), the platform-as-a-service provider famously built atop AWS, is a SoftLayer customer, although Heroku CEO Byron Sebastian declined to comment on how it’s using SoftLayer (or that it’s using it at all). That these companies use SoftLayer doesn’t mean they…

Updated: IPG’s full memo to publishers on page 2.

Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) has turned off the buy button on nearly 5,000 Kindle titles from distributor Independent Publishers Group after IPG refused to capitulate to Amazon’s demand for better terms.

The story was first reported by Publishers Marketplace and was confirmed by IPG President Mark Suchomel, who told me, “We’re offering [the e-book sales terms] we offered last week, and somehow they think it’s not quite good enough.” As IPG’s contract with Amazon approached renewal, Amazon “told us [the move] was coming, and has been telling us what the consequences were if we didn’t change what we were offering.”

IPG’s full memo to client publishers is on page 2.

The Chicago-based IPG is a distributor, which means that it provides services like marketing, sales and distribution to smaller client publishers. The company represents around 400 publishers, and some of the titles…

– More than 200 Jewish students at Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton campus received fake eviction notices from a pro-Palestinian group.

The notices were posted March 30 by the campus group Students for Justice in Palestine, the Florida Jewish Journal reported April 5. The notices were posted to draw attention to the alleged number of Palestinian home demolitions by Israeli troops over the past three decades.

Some of the students who did not read the notice carefully thought that they were actually being evicted, a Jewish student told the newspaper.

“We’re considering it a hate crime,” Rayna Exelbierd, 20, a Jewish student who received a fake eviction notice, told the newspaper. “The flier promotes hate; it doesn’t promote peace. People were scared by it. People felt threatened by it.”

The fliers contained the university housing department’s official stamp.

“The recent mock eviction postings did not comply with the policies of University…
